The Timbers, Surrey Hills

A Contemporary Home in the Surrey Hills

Nestled within the rolling landscape of the Surrey Hills, The Timbers is a new-build detached home designed by Morph Design Studio to celebrate its natural surroundings. Acting as residential architects and project managers, we created a property that merges contemporary architecture with a strong connection to the outdoors. The home overlooks a prestigious vineyard, offering uninterrupted views that define the design approach. From the moment you enter through the striking double-height hallway, your eye is drawn through the interior toward the landscape beyond, a perfect expression of light, proportion, and perspective.

Design Inspired by Site and Setting

The site’s gently sloping topography informed every design decision. As architects experienced in working with complex landscapes, we embraced the levels to create a sequence of distinct, interlinked spaces. Subtle floor height variations across the ground floor provide spatial interest and flow, while maintaining visual connection throughout. Acting as the planning approval architect, we ensured that the design harmonised with Surrey Hills planning principles and local vernacular. The result is a carefully proportioned home that complements its environment while offering a layout that feels natural, logical, and full of character.

Maximising Views and Natural Light

Light and outlook were central to the design of The Timbers. Expansive glazing at the rear captures sweeping vineyard views, while a barn-style sliding door in the entrance hall provides framed vistas through the house and out into the landscape. As residential architects, we planned the internal arrangement to enhance openness and flow, creating bright, airy spaces with strong visual links to the garden. The first-floor balcony and principal bedroom continue this dialogue, offering private views across Surrey’s countryside. Every opening and orientation was considered to optimise light, comfort, and connection to nature.

Adapting Design for Family Living

When the project evolved to accommodate the client’s growing family, our architects adapted the design with care and precision. The internal layout was refined to introduce additional space without compromising the original vision. Through detailed technical drawings and coordination, we ensured that changes integrated seamlessly with existing volumes and materials. This flexibility illustrates Morph Design Studio’s commitment to creating homes that evolve with their occupants, functional, comfortable, and timeless in design. The result remains consistent with our philosophy: architecture that adapts gracefully while maintaining design integrity.

Outdoor Design and Landscape Integration

The external landscape plays a vital role in the identity of The Timbers. Acting as extension architects and landscape coordinators, we reimagined the gardens to complement the home’s architecture. Stone retaining walls define terraced lawns and wildflower beds, echoing the textures of the surrounding Surrey Hills. At the garden’s edge, a multi-purpose garden room, terrace, and greenhouse encourage outdoor living throughout the seasons. Raised planting beds and the preservation of the original pond add natural balance, framing tranquil views back toward the house. This relationship between architecture and landscape defines the project’s enduring appeal.

A Home in Harmony with Its Landscape

The Timbers, Surrey Hills captures Morph Design Studio’s belief that architecture should respond directly to its setting. Through thoughtful architectural design, precise detailing, and considered building project management, we created a home that is both contemporary and connected. The structure’s clean geometry, material warmth, and integration with the landscape reflect our ongoing commitment to sustainable, site-specific design. This project exemplifies our approach as residential architects in Surrey, creating distinctive, enduring homes that enhance their surroundings and enrich daily life.
