What does the Cotswolds National Landscape mean for a design?
Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England were renamed National Landscapes in 2023. The designation and the protection behind it did not change. National policy gives great weight to conserving and enhancing landscape and scenic beauty, so scale, roof form, materials, boundary walls, hard landscaping and external lighting all get close attention. Will I have to build in natural stone?
In most cases councils will expect walling that matches the local stone in colour, coursing and texture, particularly in a conservation area, on a listed building or where a building is prominent in the landscape.
