Set within the tranquil Surrey countryside, The Old Bakery in Cobham is a Grade II listed property with a rich history dating back to the 17th century. Over time, several modern additions had altered the home’s character, and our clients sought to restore its authentic charm. Morph Design Studio was appointed as listed building architects and residential architects to oversee a sensitive restoration that respected the past while introducing modern practicality. The goal was to revive the original fabric of the building, retaining the enchanting old bakery at the rear while creating a warm, functional family home.
Working as listed building architects, our team began with a detailed analysis of the structure and layout. We undertook measured surveys and technical drawings to assess the existing conditions and plan the restoration. The bakery’s original timber frame, exposed beams, and solid brickwork were carefully inspected to understand their integrity. As part of the process, we collaborated closely with heritage officers to ensure compliance with Cobham’s local conservation guidelines. Each intervention was guided by sensitivity to materials, structure, and proportion, preserving what was historic while renewing what was worn.
During the refurbishment, we revealed the true condition of the old bakery’s structure. Once deterioration was confirmed, our architects led the strengthening and preservation works, stabilising the timber framework and repairing original brick walls. Authentic materials such as reclaimed clay roof tiles and traditional drainage systems were sourced to maintain historical accuracy. These details ensured the building retained its character while meeting modern construction standards. The approach reflected Morph Design Studio’s expertise in blending conservation craftsmanship with precise technical drawing and coordination.
While the external form celebrates heritage, the interiors have been thoughtfully reimagined to meet modern family needs. The restored bakery now opens into a spacious kitchen and dining area with heritage-style doors that connect to the gardens. The combination of traditional timber detailing and contemporary finishes creates a subtle balance between authenticity and comfort. Acting as both residential architects and extension architects, we ensured that each internal space feels bright, cohesive, and in harmony with the building’s original scale. The new layout reflects modern living standards while respecting centuries of architectural heritage.
As part of our role in building project management, we worked closely with heritage craftsmen, structural engineers, and conservation officers throughout construction. Every step was guided by collaboration and technical precision. Our architects oversaw material selection, site coordination, and quality control to ensure that each repair and addition met exacting standards. Through this process, we maintained both structural stability and design consistency, safeguarding the property’s historical significance while enhancing its daily usability.
The Old Bakery, Cobham stands as a fine example of how sensitive architectural design can revitalise heritage buildings for modern life. The restoration celebrates Surrey’s architectural legacy, combining craftsmanship, conservation, and innovation. By uniting the expertise of listed building architects, residential designers, and skilled tradespeople, Morph Design Studio delivered a home that bridges centuries of history. The result is a space that feels timeless, where the warmth of the past meets the clarity and function of contemporary family living.
