Planning and Technical Precision
Our first task was to secure planning approval for the proposed extension, ensuring the scheme aligned with Elmbridge council’s local guidelines. Acting as the planning approval architect, we carefully dismantled and reinstated the existing garage wall as part of the construction process, integrating it into the new structure with precision. Detailed technical drawings and building project management ensured that each stage of the build was carefully coordinated. This approach allowed us to achieve full compliance while retaining the architectural integrity of the original property.
Designing Light and Space
At the heart of the project lies the new kitchen and breakfast room, a bright, open space framed by full-height glazing. Acting as experienced extension architects, we designed the perimeter glazing to capture daylight throughout the day, connecting the interior with the surrounding garden. A sleek glass link bridges the extension and the main house, offering transparency and continuity. The interior design emphasises simplicity and clarity, allowing light and material texture to define the space. The result is a living area that feels both spacious and serene.
Innovative Detailing for Natural Light
A key design challenge was the restriction on adding roof lights to the new structure. To overcome this, our architects introduced a distinctive bevel-profile ceiling that subtly directs sunlight deeper into the interior. This innovation enhances the feeling of openness without altering the roof form. The interplay between the bevel detail, glazing, and reflected light creates a dynamic quality within the space.
