Period Elegance, East Molesey

Restoring Heritage with Contemporary Design

Situated on a tree-lined street in East Molesey, this Edwardian restoration and extension project by Morph Design Studio demonstrates how traditional architecture can be sensitively reimagined for modern living. Acting as residential architects and extension specialists, we collaborated closely with our clients, interior designer Leoma Harper, and the contractor to breathe new life into a once-dilapidated property. The design preserves its period character while introducing open, light-filled spaces that enhance everyday family life. The result is a home that embodies both heritage and contemporary design integrity.

Collaborative Architecture in Practice

Every successful transformation begins with collaboration. Our architects worked closely with the project team from concept through to completion, producing detailed technical drawings and coordinating every phase of delivery. From the outset, our goal was to balance creativity with accuracy, ensuring the design captured the essence of the Edwardian style while integrating new structural and spatial requirements. Acting as the planning approval architect, we managed the submission process and liaised with local authorities, helping the project progress smoothly and efficiently.

Respecting Edwardian Character

Maintaining the home’s Edwardian identity was fundamental to the scheme. Original features such as cornices, sash windows, and fireplaces were carefully restored and complemented by contemporary interventions. As experienced listed building architects, we understand how to preserve period detailing while integrating modern layouts and materials. The new design celebrates proportion, light, and craftsmanship, qualities that define Edwardian architecture, while ensuring the home functions effortlessly for twenty-first-century family living. The façade retains its traditional presence, with subtle modernisation enhancing its overall harmony within Surrey’s architectural landscape.

A Modern Extension Filled with Light

To create a stronger connection between the home and garden, our extension architects designed a rear addition defined by large Crittall-style windows and a stepped-down plan that invites natural light throughout. The lofty kitchen and dining space provide a clear visual contrast to the original structure yet feel entirely unified through materials, scale, and colour. The extension enhances spatial flow and creates an inviting hub for family gatherings. By combining period craftsmanship with contemporary detailing, the design delivers a distinctive yet timeless addition that complements the surrounding character of East Molesey.

Design Precision and Project Management

Behind the design lies a framework of detailed technical drawing and structured building project management. Our team oversaw the build, working with contractors to ensure each stage met specification and quality expectations. Through consistent communication and on-site involvement, we maintained accuracy, cost control, and scheduling. Every design decision, from window placement to joinery detail, was delivered with precision, ensuring architectural consistency between the restored and extended spaces. This hands-on management reflects our belief that good design depends on equally good execution.

A Seamless Blend of Past and Present

Period Elegance, East Molesey captures Morph Design Studio’s approach to architecture: respecting heritage while embracing innovation.
