Sustainable Sailing Club

Club Nautique Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat

Set in the stunning French Riviera, this sailing club competition entry focuses on delivering a sustainable and innovative club facility with increased capacity for its users. The proposal also introduces a rooftop bar and restaurant with space for sailing club events and displays.

An all weather boat and sail area for up to 20 boats enables the sails to be dried and stored in optimal conditions. The hanging sails provide a unique and eye-catching insight into the club from the surrounding beach. The club design centres around the use of sliding screens and canopies using recycled waste seagrass from the banquettes which wash up on surrounding shores. This renewable natural resource plays a key part in marine ecosystems and its use within the design helps to raise awareness of the complex coastal environment - rather than being sent to landfill at cost to the local authority.

Additionally, 73% of the existing structure is retained to minimise the demand for new construction. The old structure is celebrated with a mural design created by local artists and inspired by historic local artist, Jean Cocteau.
